Labor Day is here, and with school back in session, summer routines are a distant memory. Many families feel the stress of a new school year, especially with earlier start dates that can make preparation feel rushed and chaotic. The good news is, there are practical ways to manage this stress and help your family get into a new rhythm!

Set Realistic Expectations

The first couple of weeks will likely be a bit disorganized, and that’s okay. Research shows it takes about two to three weeks for people to adjust to a new schedule. Acknowledging this can help reduce anxiety and allow you to breathe through the initial chaos.

Get on the Same Page

Visual schedules can be a huge help. Large wall calendars or bulletin boards with color-coded schedules for each family member can keep everyone organized. For older kids, using a digital calendar on their phone works well. The goal is to have a single, easy-to-access reference for everyone.

Prioritize Sleep and Nutrition

Getting enough sleep is crucial for managing stress. Adults need at least 7-8 hours, while kids need more depending on their age. Set consistent bedtimes for everyone, including yourself.

Proper nutrition is also key. Eating healthy, whole foods can help repair the body from the effects of stress and strengthen the immune system. Try to reduce or eliminate caffeine, sugar, alcohol, and processed foods, which can increase stress and anxiety.

Incorporate Stress-Reducing Activities

Simple activities can make a big difference:

  • Move Your Body: Physical activity, even a short walk, helps lower stress levels. Walk around the block after dinner or take the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Breathe Deeply: Belly breathing—inhaling slowly so your abdomen rises, holding, and then exhaling slowly—can calm your nervous system and help you feel more relaxed.
  • Find Humor: Laughter is a powerful stress reducer. When something unexpected happens, try to find the humor in the situation. It’s an effective way to navigate life’s inevitable chaos.

By focusing on these key strategies, you can help your family navigate the transition back to school with less stress and more ease.
