Telling stories is a wonderful way to increase your child’s vocabulary. As you tell a story, you can use new words and explain what they mean. You can also talk about an experience your child hasn’t had yet and explain what happens. Remember that almost any story you tell your child will be of interest, because you are the one telling it!

Here are some storytelling starter tips:

● If you have an infant or toddler, start with silly sounds. Your child will delight in repeating the sounds you make. This is the beginning of having conversations with your little one.
● If you are comfortable, talk to your child about the day they were born. This can be a wonderful bonding experience.
● Tell a story about your own childhood. Your child will enjoy hearing about an experience you had at an age similar to their own.
● If available, use a puppet or stuffed animal to tell a story. Use different voices for characters and ask your child to join in.
● Encourage your child to tell a story about a favorite event of theirs. You can even encourage them to act it out!

The library can be a great place to tell your child stories, too! The library has lots of books filled with great stories to share.

Everything at the library is free to use. Learn more at www.grpl.org or call 616-988-5400.
