Making Mealtime Easier: Get Kids to Eat Without Stress!

Mealtime with a toddler can be exhausting, frustrating, and confusing. One minute, their favorite food may be oatmeal. The next minute, they sling the oatmeal to the dog in a rage and claim they hate oatmeal. However, next week, they may love oatmeal all over again just because you added blueberries.

I know how frustrating this is – I have been there! I have two teenage children who went through the same thing when they were young. My oldest has turned out to be an adventurous eater and is willing to try any food. Meanwhile, my youngest child prefers anything with chocolate or Nutella and sticks to the basics. Both are okay! You got this, parents.

Listed below are some tips I’ve learned to make mealtime easier:

1. Be a Role Model: You are the most important role model for your child.

  • If others in the household are trying different foods, your child is also more likely to try them as well. Eating at the table together will also limit distractions during mealtime and help your child try new foods.

2. Prepare The Same Meal for The Whole Family: Preparing meals is time consuming – make it easy!

  • If you are making spaghetti and meatballs for yourself, offer your child the same (note: make sure you offer the correct size pieces for your child). Even if they only eat the noodles, celebrate the small success.

3. Try, Try Again: A new day may bring a willingness to try a new food!

  • It can take up to fifteen tries before your child will eat a new food and possibly enjoy it. Keep in mind, it’s not you or your cooking skills. Your children are growing, learning, and exploring new experiences with food!

Remember that making mealtime easier is a process, and it will get easier as your kids get older. We believe in you, parents! For questions or more tips on how to make mealtime with your little one easier, contact us at navigation@familyfutures.net.
